Frequently Asked Questions
Â
What is a humidor?
A humidor is an airtight storage container or case designed to maintain a desired level of humidity to protect that which it is storing. Humidors are synonymous with cigars to ensure all components of a cigar (wrapper, tobacco filler, binder) are preserved to keep its structural integrity in tact over time. When a cigar is not stored properly the fluctuating temperature and humidity will cause the tobacco leaves to expand and contract causing the cigar to either dry out (humidity too low) or becoming moldy (humidity too high).Â
Â
What is the ideal humidity level to store a cigar?
Around 70%. But depending on where you live the range could be anywhere from 65-75%. Most commonly between 68-72%. When a cigar is not stored properly the fluctuating temperature and humidity will cause the tobacco leaves to expand and contract causing the cigar to either dry out (humidity too low) or becoming moldy (humidity too high).Â
Â
How to season a humidor?
The seasoning process of a cigar humidor box is designed to bring the wood lining inside the humidor as close as possible to operating relative humidity. The wood lining inside the humidors acts as a buffer to regulate moisture so it must be treated properly before introducing the cigars.Â
- When setting up a new humidor for the first time, remove any dust or debri from the manufacturing process by wiping down the interior with a dry cloth.
- If the humidor is new or has not been used for some time, place a small shallow bowl or container of distilled water inside the box.
- Close the lid and let it sit and acclimate for 12-24 hours.
- Once the time has passed, if a large portion of the water has evaporated, refill the bowl a second time and leave it inside the cigar humidor for another 24 hours.
- Once the water stops evaporating, proceed to "charge the humidifier."Â
- "Charging the humidor"Â -Â Just before loading cigars in the humidor remove the cigar humidifier unit from the box (this is the sponge like plastic device that is soaked in distilled water).
- Submerge the cigar humidifier in distilled water or humidifier solution for 30 minutes.
- Remove it from the water or solution, dry it and set it face down on a paper towel for 30 minutes. This is to allow any excess water to escape from the humidifier so that water leakage on to the cigars is avoided.
- Once this step is completed, secure the humidifier to the inside of the box using the included velcro adhesive or magnets.
- The humidor is now seasoned and the cigars can now be set inside.Â
Â
How to store cigars without a humidor?
Storing cigars without a humidor is not ideal but it can be done by creating an airtight environment with a humidification source such as a ziploc bag, tupperware, or mason jar.
Â
How long do cigars last in a humidor?
When stored in a cigar humidor with humidifier and maintained well, a cigar can last for several months to several years, with high-quality premium cigars potentially lasting even a decade or more. The exact lifespan depends on the cigar quality, brand, and how well you maintain the humidor's humidity levels.Â
